Elbow accident leaves San Sebastian goalscorer Paeng Are bleeding

San Sebastian star Rafael “Paeng” Are’s offensive effort against Benilde went for naught as they lost to the Blazers in a Sunday slugfest that left the scoring guard bleeding to the ground from an accidental elbow injury.

The October 13 game was seriously halted at 5:03 of the third quarter after a physical altercation between Mark Sangco and Paeng, in which the latter was seen bleeding from his upper lip after a severe blow to the face.

The incident occurred in the middle of San Sebastian’s mini-rally, causing the Blazers’ lead to shrink from nine to four (58-54).

During a defensive possession, Are tried to take down Sangco, who then pushed hard toward the baseline to avoid his defense.

Sangco extended his off arm to create more distance, which unfortunately landed right on Ares’ face.

The 5-foot-7 San Sebastian guard immediately fell to the ground as he pressed his bloody lips together while being attended to by medical staff.

Sangco, in turn, was assessed an unsportsmanlike foul for “excessive, hard contact by a player while attempting to pass the ball or an opponent.”

After icing his injured lip while resting for more minutes than usual, Ares bounced back in the fourth quarter and continued his scoring explosion, finishing the game with 29 points on 10/22 field goal shooting along with seven rebounds and Lose two dimes in one effort.

In the end, the Blazers held on and prevented another San Sebastian setback, 91-85.
