Car overturns after serious accident in Santos Suárez, Havana.

A violent collision between two cars on a corner in the Santos Suárez district of Havana this Sunday ended with one of the vehicles overturning, although no casualties appear to have been reported.

Facebook posts reported the morning’s traffic accident, when at the intersection of Juan Bruno Zayas and General Lacret streets, a Fiat Polski collided with a Moskvitch, which tipped onto its roof due to the force of the impact.

According to witnesses, the driver of the Moskvitch did not heed the “STOP” sign on Juan Bruno Zayas, which was the cause of the collision.

One person assured that there was a pregnant woman in the overturned car, but did not provide any information about her health. It is unknown whether she or other occupants of the vehicle were injured.

In the comments on the posts, residents agreed to call this intersection a “hot corner” because drivers typically do not stop for signs and it is common to exceed the speed limit on both streets.

“The hot corner of Santo Suárez does not respect the stop sign and rushes through at full speed,” summarized one Internet user, while others indicated that there have been many accidents at this intersection for this reason.

Another woman pointed out that the owners of the house had installed a barrier on the corner where the “Polaquito” landed because of the frequent accidents. “A taxi crashed into this wall a while ago,” she assured.

Several people stated that the car overturned due to excessive speed despite ignoring the stop sign. “If they drive slowly it hits but doesn’t tip over,” said one, while another warned: “That doesn’t happen at 40 or 50 km… They’re still not aware of the danger.” Lives and the consequences.

Other comments pointed to the lack of horizontal signage (road markings on the sidewalk) and the need to limit the speed to 40 km/h for those coming from the Calzada de 10 de Octubre along Lacret.

According to official statistics, there was a 13% decrease in traffic accidents in Cuba in the first half of the year (543 fewer) compared to the same period in 2023.

However, numerous accidents on the country’s roads and streets are reported on social media, often resulting in fatalities, injuries and significant property damage.
