One dead after a vehicle struck a dumpster on the road in south Kansas City on Saturday

A person was killed after the vehicle he was riding in hit a large dumpster sitting on the street in south Kansas City, a police spokesman said Sunday morning.

Police responded to a single vehicle at the intersection of Hillcrest Road and Fairlane Drive around 8 a.m. Saturday, said Sgt. Philip DiMartino, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

Initial police reports indicate the driver of a white Ford Escape was traveling north on Hillcrest Road when the vehicle crashed into a large dumpster that was in the roadway. Both the driver and passenger were taken to the hospital, where the female passenger was pronounced dead from her injuries Saturday evening, DiMartino said.

The driver’s condition was not released.

The name and age of the person killed in the crash were not released. No further details were available.

According to police, the death is the 74th traffic fatality reported in the city so far this year, compared to 75 this time last year.
