Myrtle Beach police arrest a man after a woman claims he sexually abused her when she was a minor

Myrtle Beach police arrested a 37-year-old man after a woman told police he allegedly assaulted her at a hotel in 2010.

Joseph Witherspoon was arrested on October 10 for first-degree sexual assault of a minor. He is being held without bail at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

The victim told police July 29 that Witherspoon attacked her during a vacation at the Caribbean Resort, 3000 North Ocean Boulevard, in November 2010, a police report said. The victim’s age was not released, but the charge against a minor means the victim was 11 years old or younger under South Carolina law.

The relationship between Witherspoon and the victim was not reported.

Witherspoon would have been 23 at the time of the attack. After the crime was reported in July, Myrtle Beach Police Department Investigations and Major Crime Units were notified.

According to the law firm of Kenneth Berger, there is no statute of limitations on criminal charges in South Carolina.
