Srinagar:

A dispute over a parking space ended in murder in Srinagar district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, officials in Srinagar said.

Police said they had taken note of the incident. One person, namely Zareef Ahmed Mir, son of Ab Raheem Mir, stabbed another person named Amir Razak Mir, son of Abdul Razak Mir, during a dispute over a vehicle parking space near their shops, according to the officials. Both are residents of Parimpora area in Srinagar.

“The victim was declared dead by attending doctors on arrival at SMHS Hospital Srinagar,” the officials said, adding that an FIR has been lodged.

“Case FIR number 114/2024 under Section 103 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) is registered at Parimpora police station against the accused. The defendant was arrested and the murder weapon was also seized. Further investigation into the case is underway,” police said.

Srinagar city and its immediate suburbs have been congested for the last five years due to the daily influx of hundreds of new vehicles. The improvement in the law and order situation enables people to move freely in their vehicles during the day and also in the late hours.

Experts believe that while most of the roads in Srinagar city and its suburbs remain the same, major arteries often get clogged due to the heavy vehicular load on these roads. In addition to the traffic congestion on the roads, parking spaces within and outside the city are also becoming a major problem as disputes often arise.

In view of the congested traffic in the city of Srinagar, a spacious ring road is currently being constructed. The majority of traffic through the city will move via the ring road, providing drivers with more space and parking areas to maneuver.
