The Grizzlies’ Zach Edey could see a breakout game against the Bulls

Former Purdue Boilermaker turned Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey was one of the most anticipated rookies to keep an eye on in the preseason. But the 1.90 meter tall giant has yet to have a breakthrough game in some games.

The Canadian enjoyed one of the most brilliant college basketball careers of all time. Most recently, he averaged a dominant 25.2 points, 12.2 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game while shooting 62% from the field.

In the Grizzlies’ season opener, Edey started the game, played in just 18 minutes and scored six points, even snatched up the boards and managed a steal and a block. The rebound was as advertised, but Edey’s offensive role was not fully realized.

In his second game, Edey scored an admirable 10 points, but did so on only 2-for-8 shooting, an insufficient mark for a great. He shot an impressive 6-for-8 from the free throw line and added five rebounds and a block, but it was another game where Memphis fans probably expected a little more. Especially because Grizzlies fans haven’t seen Edey at full strength yet as he suffered an ankle injury in just his second game of Summer League.

Tonight against the Bulls, Edey should have a chance to have a breakout game.

He’s seen efficient play and a fight to make the shots he needs, and now he’ll be tasked with putting those two together while continuing to build his relationship with superstar point guard Ja Morant.

Aside from long-time veteran Nikola Vukcevic, who will present a somewhat difficult matchup, Chicago should have a frontcourt that undersized power forwards or young prospects can exploit.

The Grizzlies and Bulls kick off tonight at 7 p.m
