The Walking Dead’s Greg Nicotero reflects on the most-watched episode ten years later

the Walking Dead The most-watched episode turns ten years old on October 12th. Greg Nicotero, director of the fifth season premiere “No Sanctuary,” reflected on the episode in an interview.




In an interview with Comicbook.com, Nicotero looks back at the shocking premiere and gives insight into how it was made. “No Sanctuary,” written by Scott M. Gimple, premiered on October 12, 2014 on AMC. The episode is both the most watched and one of the highest rated in the series. Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his group were captured by Terminus residents who wanted to slaughter them. The tense battle to escape from Terminus captured the audience’s attention with great excitement 22 million viewers in total.

Nicotero said producing the episode was “one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve ever had.” Nicotero continues, “I remember sitting with Scott Gimple and talking about the rock bottom sequence and using the baseball bat as a reference to Negan’s impending arrival a few seasons later.”

I’m shocked at what happened to us.


Nicotero described the beginning as “probably the most harrowing first 10 minutes of an episode, and we got away with it.” The creation of the episode was incredibly ambitious. Nicotero said: “I mean, I’m shocked at what happened to us. We shot this episode in nine, ten days. I don’t even know how we did it, but we did it. And it was a really great experience to see all of those stories realized in this particular episode.”

“No Sanctuary” wasn’t the episode Nicotero looked back on. Nicotero has been with the series since it premiered in 2010 and has worked on many episodes of the legendary series. “[‘No Sanctuary’] and “No Way Out,” the invasion of Alexandria, Night of the Living Dead I think these are two of the strongest episodes of the series.” Season 6, Episode 9, “No Way Out,” ranked slightly above “No Sanctuary” in terms of reception.
