The sponsorship drama unfolds as the Gresini team and QJ Motor part ways over cultural controversy

The dispute between Gresini Racing and its main Moto2 sponsor, QJ Motor, has reached a breaking point after days of tension. At the heart of the issue is Spanish rider Manuel González’s controversial dismissal claim, sparked by a cultural misstep that deeply offended the Chinese sponsor.

The tension began when González wore a “hachimaki” bow during the Japanese Grand Prix. The symbol, commonly associated with Japanese forces in World War II, sparked outrage at QJ Motor. In China, this emblem is seen as a painful reminder of a time of oppression, and the sponsor interpreted González’s choice as a blatant disregard for Chinese culture. As a result, QJ Motor demanded the immediate removal of González from the team, a demand that Gresini Racing has so far resisted.

Although Gresini has not made an official statement, increasing signs suggest that the relationship between the team and its sponsor has deteriorated beyond repair. The Moto2 section of the Gresini website no longer lists QJ Motor as an official sponsor and the team logo has been changed, leaving no trace of the sponsor’s branding or rider photos. This has led many to believe that QJ Motor terminated its contract with the Italian team after negotiations over the González incident failed.

Manuel González has publicly expressed regret over the incident and apologized on social media. The Spanish driver explained that his gesture was never intended to be political or offensive. “It was not intended to be a political message, but rather photos related to the host country of the race. “It was never my intention to disrespect or hurt the feelings of the Chinese people,” wrote González, also expressing regret for the offense caused.

The situation puts Gresini Racing in a precarious position as the loss of a key sponsor could have a significant financial impact on the team. Meanwhile, González’s future at Gresini is at stake. While there is hope that he will continue racing for the team, the full extent of the sponsor’s departure remains to be seen.

As the dust settles, it is likely that Gresini will have to navigate the upcoming Moto2 races without the support of QJ Motor, a move that could shatter the team’s standing in the sport. All eyes will be on the team’s next move and whether they can keep González despite this unfolding controversy.
