Remember Brad Childress? He is no longer in the NFL, his final season coming in 2019 as a senior offensive assistant for the Chicago Bears. But Minnesota Vikings fans won’t forget his tenure as head coach from 2006 to 2010.

He led the Vikings to a 39-35 record, which included two postseason appearances where he went 1-2. His best season by far was 2009, when Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre joined the Vikings’ journey. Purple and Gold fans across the country felt like it was finally their year, only to see the 40-year-old throw across his body for a game-winning interception in the NFC Championship Game loss to the Bountygate Saints.

Then, the following year, Childress was fired after Week 11 after a 3-7 start to the season. Leslie Frazier took over as interim coach before becoming the full-time coach for three seasons. While we know a 3-7 start wasn’t what the Vikings expected from “Chilly,” we now know the real reason Childress was fired.

Recently, former Packers tight end Mark Chmura, who spent his entire seven-year NFL career catching passes from Brett Favre in Green Bay, shared a wild story about his former quarterback. According to Chmura, it was actually Favre who got Brad Childress fired in 2010, and he did it all from a wild stand. Here’s what he had to say when he appeared on the Jen, Gabe & Chewy show on ESPN Milwaukee earlier this week.

“Second year they don’t play as well. Chilly (Childress) walks up to him and says, “I’m going to take you out of the game.” And we all know number 4, he believes he can come back from 100 points. And I don’t blame the guy at all. He said no. And they got into a fight on the sidelines. Chilly replaces Brett, Brett runs onto the field and says “You’re not replacing me.” Plays the rest of the game and gets into a big fight after the game. Brett is in a deer enclosure on Tuesday. Zygi Wilf calls him and asks, “What should I do?” And Brett said, “Fire his ass off.” What does Zygi Wilf do? Fire him.”

Mark Chmura on how Brett Favre got Brad Childress fired

The topic only came up when the Jets surprisingly decided to fire coach Robert Saleh after the loss to the Vikings in London. Chmura believed that Aaron Rodgers had indeed played a role in his coach’s firing, using as an argument the example of his former teammate who had done the same to Childress.

But why was Childress the last straw in Minnesota in Week 11? Because the Vikings had just lost to the Packers 31-3 on Sunday, two days before they were fired. Whatever the case, the Vikings won their next two games. Joe Webb and Tarvaris Jackson were both allowed to start later in the season, but only after Favre suffered a shoulder sprain.

So now you know how Brett Favre once had Brad Childress shot from his deer stand. Is there anything more Minnesotan than that?
