Bullet fired, window smashed at Jewish school in north Toronto: police

TORONTO – Police say they are investigating after a bullet was fired at a Jewish girls’ school in north Toronto.

According to Toronto police, the shooting targeted Bais Chaya Mushka Elementary School around 4 a.m. Saturday.

The same school was the target of another shooting in May, and police say an important part of the investigation is determining whether two incidents are related.

Insp Paul Krawczyk says the school was empty at the time of the shooting and no one was injured.

He says a window was smashed after being hit by a bullet.

Krawczyk says police have increased their presence in Jewish neighborhoods in recent weeks and will continue to have a greater presence in the area.

The police are asking anyone for information that could be helpful in furthering the investigation.

Krawczyk noted that the incident occurred on a holy day in the Jewish calendar.

“It’s Yom Kippur and a Jewish school has been shot up. That’s why the hate crimes unit is an important part of this investigation,” Krawczyk said Saturday.
