After an exchange, cyclist runs over and stabs a man in his car in downtown Des Plaines: Police

Des Plaines police are investigating a stabbing that occurred Friday in the 1500 block of Miner St. in downtown Des Plaines near the Metra station.

At around 12:15 p.m., officers responded to the scene and reported a stabbing. When officers arrived, they encountered a 53-year-old man from Skokie standing in the roadway suffering from multiple stab wounds to his left arm. Officers quickly performed life-saving measures to stop the bleeding. The Des Plaines Fire Department was called to the scene and transported the victim to an area hospital for serious injuries.

A preliminary investigation revealed that while the Skokie man was driving his vehicle westbound on Miner Street, he struck a bicyclist riding in the roadway. There was an exchange of words between the driver and the cyclist, after which the cyclist drove along the driver’s side of the stopped vehicle. With the window down, more words were exchanged and the cyclist began punching the driver through the open window, police said. When the driver, who was still sitting, began to defend himself, the cyclist pulled a knife out of his pocket and stabbed the driver several times.

The cyclist, described as male, approximately 30-40 years old, olive complexion, wearing a gray tank top, khaki shorts and carrying a backpack, fled the scene.

According to the police, it appears to be an isolated road traffic incident. This is an ongoing investigation. Further information will be provided as it becomes available, police added. Anyone with information about this incident should contact Des Plaines Police at 847.391.5400.
