According to prosecutors, a 34-year-old man walked into a police station and confessed to sexually assaulting and abusing a child under 13 in Mundelein.

Alexander Ramos, 34, of Mundelein, was indicted by a grand jury Wednesday on two counts of criminal sexual assault of a child and three counts of criminal sexual abuse of a child.

Lake County Assistant Prosecutor Colleen McConnell said Ramos went to Mundelein police on the evening of Sept. 14 to confess to sexually abusing a minor family member.

Ramos said the first incident occurred in late 2023 when the child was under 13 years old.

He said he saw the girl sleeping in a robe and she turned over and exposed herself, McConnell said. He allegedly laid his hands on her and touched her inappropriately.

Ramos said he felt like he was “going too far,” so he stopped and left the room, McConnell said.

A few weeks later, the child was sleeping in the same bedroom as Ramos when the man noticed she was sleeping near him.

He put his hand on her hip and she didn’t wake up, so he moved his hand over her breast, McConnell said.

Three similar incidents occurred in which Ramos put his hands down the sleeping girl’s pants and sexually assaulted her, McConnell said.

In at least one of the incidents, the victim’s mother was in bed, sleeping, when the incident occurred.

The victim’s mother recently caught Ramos waking up in the middle of the night and going into the nursery.

He had no explanation for his actions and told her it was no longer appropriate to help her if she was having trouble sleeping, McConnell said.

She stopped allowing him to be near the girl when she noticed him massaging the child in the living room.

Ramos, who said he was “attracted” to the child, told the woman he would turn himself in to police, McConnell said.

The mother confirmed to police that the child occasionally slept in her bed because she was having trouble sleeping and that Ramos sometimes went into the girl’s bedroom to help her fall asleep.

Mundelein police responded to the home and determined what clothing the victim was wearing during the assault.

McConnell said Ramos was previously convicted of assault after initially being charged with aggravated sexual abuse as a juvenile in Lake County in 2005.

The Lake County District Attorney’s Office filed a motion to detain Ramos after his arrest last month.

The petition was granted and Ramos remains held in the Lake County Jail pending trial.

Ramos is scheduled to be arraigned on those charges at a hearing on Tuesday.
