A man was arrested late Monday night in north Phoenix for fatally stabbing another man, according to Phoenix police.

Officers responded to a call just before 11 p.m. near 2400 East Union Hills Drive, where they found 54-year-old Henry Lawrence with a stab wound to the neck. He was taken to the hospital by Phoenix Fire Department where he was pronounced dead.

According to court documents, 41-year-old Matthew Ryan Fain allegedly left the scene but was located by officers minutes later and taken into custody.

Witnesses told police that Fain was walking around the area looking for Lawrence and allegedly said that Lawrence was “going to die tonight.”

In his police interview, Fain admitted to being in the area and recognized that he had been standing over the victim at the time of the incident, but denied stabbing him.

A search of his clothing revealed blood on Fain’s shorts.

Fain was charged with first-degree premeditated murder. His bail was set at $1 million.

Phoenix police described the murder as brutal and noted that no drugs or alcohol were involved. The investigation is still ongoing.
