Raleigh police make an arrest in a sexual assault case in 1998

The evidence was collected as part of the North Carolina Department of Justice’s Sexual Assault Kit Initiative.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Raleigh police announced an arrest in a 1998 sexual assault case.

According to RPD, 58-year-old David Lee Toney has been charged with first-degree rape, kidnapping, first-degree assault and attempted sexual assault in the decades-old cold case. All of them are crimes.

The evidence in this case was collected as part of the North Carolina Department of Justice’s Sexual Assault Kit Initiative.

The arrest came as a result of a positive hit in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), a national database that contains DNA profiles of convicted criminals, unsolved crime scene evidence and missing persons.
