2 people charged after shots fired during a high-speed chase in Gray Court

GRAY COURT, SC (FOX Carolina) – The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office said two people have been charged in connection with a carjacking, a high-speed chase and shots fired at officers.

According to the sheriff’s office, around 9:40 p.m. on Oct. 7, an officer noticed a driver nearly hitting another vehicle after failing to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Highway 14 and Hunts Bridge Road. The driver then overtook another vehicle on a double yellow line

Officers said the driver passed another vehicle on a double yellow line and continued onto I-385 and then onto Highway 14 while speeding and refusing to stop for blue lights.

Officials said a passenger in the car began shooting at the officer while the driver continued to speed and objects were thrown from the vehicle.

Both the driver and passenger were taken into custody near Narnie Road, officials said.

The sheriff’s office mentioned that they learned the car was stolen in a carjacking in Greenville and the gun was stolen from Spartanburg.

Officers said the passenger, a 16-year-old from Simpsonville, was arrested and charged with:

  • Attempted murder
  • Possession of a stolen firearm
  • Possession of a converted firearm/submachine gun
  • Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana
  • Possession of a stolen vehicle

The driver, 20-year-old Braxton Mitchell of Lyman, was arrested and charged with:

  • Attempted murder
  • Failure to stop for blue lights
  • Possession of a stolen vehicle
  • Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana
  • Driving Under Suspension, 2nd Offense
  • Reckless driving
