Cat rescued from dog attack stuns internet with ‘drastic’ transformation

The internet was stunned by a rescued cat’s remarkable transformation from a scruffy kitten to a handsome feline.

Cat owner Janny shared a post on Reddit (u/cribaby_JM) showing before and after pictures of her black cat named Mochi. Mochi was rescued in September 2023 after Janny found him and his siblings “in the middle of a dog attack.” Unfortunately, the sibling didn’t make it, but Janny brought Mochi to the safety of her home in Portugal.

At that time he was still a little kitten, just a few weeks old, and Janny told us about it Newsweek that he was “super wobbly” and full of fleas. Not to mention, the fur was patchy all over his body, and Janny remembers how an entire clump of fur “just slipped off his body” when she petted him.

“When we found him he was hidden in some bushes and he was so tiny. He had big blue eyes and was just learning to walk,” Janny said. “He had super patchy hair and we actually thought he was going gray because his hair was so light and patchy.”

Mochi was incredibly shy at first, but after gaining some confidence he really started to let his personality shine through. He started following everything and was very adventurous, so keeping him in the house proved to be a challenge.

Now, a year later, Mochi looks like a completely different cat. The shaggy fur has disappeared and has been replaced by smooth and sleek fur everywhere. Black cats are often called “voids” because of their silky black fur. In fact, after turning one year old last month, he is now a very reserved and sophisticated looking cat.

Janny continued: “He’s changed a lot since then. It was like we woke up one day and he was a healthy, happy boy. He is much healthier and now almost pitch black. Instead, he’s no longer chasing us.” He stands in our way, and if we dare to step over him, he shows why that’s a bad idea.

“He is very affectionate now, especially with my partner. He is usually outside during the day and likes his space from time to time. When he’s indoors, he sometimes playfully attacks his siblings when he feels like it. But he’s in a good mood.” More relaxed now.”

Since his rescue, Janny has strived to give Mochi the best life possible. She feeds him a high-protein diet and lets him run around outside and socialize with the other cats nearby. But most of all, she believes it’s the amount of love and support she gave him that led to the “drastic transformation.”

On October 8, Janny posted a before and after picture of Mochi on Reddit to show how far he’s come. Within days, it went viral with over 17,000 votes and more than 300 comments so far, as internet users praised the incredible difference a year makes.

Janny is pleased with the overwhelmingly positive response online.

She told Newsweek: “I didn’t think anyone would care at all, but it seems a lot of people care, which definitely makes me very happy since Mochi is a special boy.”

“I find it absurd that people think black cats are bad luck. Without mochi in our lives, the bad times would have been much worse. I often visit animal rescues on the island and there are so many black cats that don’t get adopted.” Because of the stigma, please don’t look at a cat for its fur, pay attention to its personality and appreciate it because it won’t be judged always be here.

Among the hundreds of comments on the viral post, many Redditors praised Mochi’s pretty new look.

One comment reads: “From Gremlin to Gentleman.”

Another Redditor wrote: “Oh my god he was such a scrawny little menace. What a handsome young man.”

While another person added: “What a poor, scared baby he was. Thank you for saving him.”
