Doctor Who star Nicola Bryant belongs to the line-up for which it is scheduled Harry’s homea gently funny and emotional audio drama that touches on the everyday reality of dementia and is currently seeking crowdfunding on IndieGogo.

Harry’s home is a non-profit project and will be made available free of charge to dementia and Alzheimer’s charities upon completion. But to complete it, the team is led by Helen Quigleyknown as a podcast producer and her work for B7 Media and Comedy Central, needs your support!.

Harry’s home – an authentic, lightly humorous and emotional piece that touches on the everyday realism of living with someone living with dementia – was originally written by Hannah Puddefoot and was first performed by amateur theater group Theater at Baddow in Chelmsford, Essex in 2013 as one of their TAB Studio productions.

The story is a reminder that whatever is slowly being lost, there may still be time to heal old hurts, build bridges and create new memories for those left behind.

Helen Quigley from B7 Media

At that time directed by Helen Quigleynow production manager of B7 Media, it had a personal impact.

“I was looking for a short play about memory to perform in Chelmsford and I happened to meet Hannah at a party,” she explains. “She told me about a play she had written: Harry’s home. It was a perfect coincidence and the premiere took place in April 2013 with a cast consisting of members of Theater at Baddow in their studio performance space.

“I always had that feeling Harry’s home would have deserved a larger audience – its subject matter, sensitivity and likeable characters resonated with everyone who saw the small, original production, but I had neither the skills nor the experience to carry it on at the time. Ten years later, I finally feel like I’ve acquired both – and I’m now at an age where it has even more resonance for me and the people around me. Both of my parents have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in the last two years.

“As I have already produced a number of professional radio plays for BBC Radio 4 and Audible at B7 Media, I contacted Hannah to see if she would be interested in adapting them Harry… for audio. Luckily it was her!”

Paired with author and script editor Colin Brake (EastEnders, doctors, bugs), Hannah expanded and adapted Harry’s home into a new drama for audio that you can support here. The initial funding – £6,750 – covers studio rent, writer, cast and studio manager fees for the recording session. Producer and director fees will be deferred until we reach the stretch goal.

“If we’re lucky and get it there early, we can set a stretch target of £10,685 (another £3,950) for Stage 2 to cover post-production,” says Helen, “including a sound designer and an original music composer… and any other costs necessary for the rewards.”
