5 Freeway closed in Boyle Heights after fatal shooting – NBC Los Angeles

Police are searching for two men who they say killed one person and injured another in a fatal shooting on the 5 Freeway in Boyle Heights.

The shooting happened around 4:17 p.m. on the 5 Freeway near the Grande Vista exit and shut down freeway lanes for hours Thursday evening.

Drivers of a gold Cadillac and Dodge Durango were involved in an altercation that led to a shooting.

“The gold Cadillac struck an uninvolved vehicle. “At this point, the occupants of the Dodge Durango became agitated and began shooting at the occupants of the gold Cadillac,” said Lt. Bob Purvis of the CHP.

In addition to those involved, several other vehicles were hit by gunfire and no one was injured.

Purvis says the gold Cadillac then made a U-turn on the highway, driving against traffic and hitting several other cars before coming to a stop.

According to the CHP, the two men were able to escape in the Durango.

Neighbors in the area were shocked by the tragedy at one of the busiest highway intersections in the country.

“It’s worrying because some of us are just trying to get home and no one knows what could happen,” said Aaria Arana, who lives in the area.

A Sigalert was issued in the area as traffic was backed up on the 710 Freeway and the northbound lanes remained closed while the investigation continued.
