To win Kelly back, Joan comes up with a plan to go to Kelly’s new school under the guise of an American journalist who writes about British children’s playtime.

Joan secretly obtains a passport for Kelly through Albie (Gershwyn Eustache Jr.) and has yet to tell Boisie about it, but continues to pursue her plan to rob Bernard’s store. Together with Albie, Paul and Boisie, Joan goes over the plan and they confirm that Boisie and Paul will break into the store as quickly as possible and take the jewels with Joan.

After clearing the store, Albie tells Joan and Boisie that they will be heading to another secret location where a caravan is waiting for them before they head to New Haven. Later that workday, however, Tom (Jack Greenlees) searches Bernard’s jewelry store and appears to be watching Joan.

That evening, Boisie packs up his things and sees that Joan has also packed a small suitcase for a child, obviously Kelly. When he confronts Joan about it later that evening, he is visibly upset as he tells Joan that going on the run with Kelly isn’t the best thing for her.

Although Joan wants to take Kelly sooner rather than later, Boisie reminds her of her original plan and that he would eventually return to Britain to get Kelly when the time is right.

Later, Boisie finally tells Joan about his own upbringing and how his mother constantly chose men over him, putting his own safety at risk and eventually using Boisie’s child support money simply for himself.

On the day of the robbery, Joan goes to work and stays late to take inventory with Bernard. While he is working, Bernard receives a call from someone telling him that he urgently needs to speak to Joan about plans for that afternoon. Boisie later comes to the store and tells Joan that Paul has retired from the business because he doesn’t trust Joan.

Although Boisie says they should stand down for now, Joan insists that they should move forward with their plan and that Albie should just move on and find someone else to do Paul’s job. Later, as they sit in the van waiting to break into the store, Boisie realizes that Paul’s deputy is actually Gary (Nick Blood), Kelly’s father and Joan’s ex.

While they grab as much as they can, Gary apparently carries out another plan by destroying the store and showing Joan that he has a loaded gun. Gary takes his own jewels and gets into an argument with Boisie, but reveals that Joan is in charge before Bernard, causing him to take the gun and shoot the ceiling. After hearing the shot, he runs to protect Joan. Boisie covers her as Bernard shoots, hitting Boisie in the leg.

Does Boisie die?

Boisie begins to bleed out and Joan tries to ask Gary and even Bernard for help, but Gary simply comes in to get his bag of stolen jewels, leaves, tells Albie that Boisie has been shot and orders him to drive.

Joan tries to stop the bleeding from Boisie’s leg and get him upright so they can escape, but his condition quickly deteriorates. Joan thinks they just have to make it to the van outside, not knowing that Albie has left them.

Boisie tells Joan to get Kelly and, with Joan’s help, makes it outside but dies in the alley behind the store.

As Joan cries over Boisie’s body, she hears police sirens and runs away.

As Joan tries to calm herself down in Boisie’s car and wipe Boisie’s blood off her, she tries to calm down to go get Kelly. Realizing the time, she quickly cleans up in a public restroom and puts on her disguise.

At Kelly’s school, she is ushered in to meet the children, and Kelly is visibly surprised to see that the woman is actually her mother. Joan puts her finger to her lips to silence her and manages to pull Kelly aside and tell her to meet her at the gate.

The next we see of them, Kelly is in the car with Joan, and Joan tries to cheer her up by singing her song together. On the drive, Joan stops to call Albie’s house and Val (Laura Aikman) answers but is in tears when she finds a message from Albie saying he has fled the country.

Joan goes to the previously arranged hideout trailer and tells Kelly that she has to do what she tells her and be a good girl. But apparently the grief over Boisie’s death is too much, as Joan struggles to remain calm despite Kelly’s attempts to cheer her up. When Kelly shows Joan her drawing, Joan sees that Kelly has drawn a picture of her “other mom,” which only upsets Joan more.

Kelly goes inside and finds Joan’s gun in her suitcase, but luckily Joan rushes in just in time to stop Kelly from pulling the trigger. Joan tells Kelly how much she loves her, but it is clear that she has decided to let Kelly go.

Joan drops Kelly off with her foster family and returns to Boisie. She transforms into Tom and the police after concluding that life has “no meaning” after the loss of Boisie and now Kelly.

How does the series end?

The series then flashes forward to four years later, as we see Joan looking out over the Spanish cliffs she first visited with Boisie. This time she’s wearing a backlash top to show off her tattoos over her childhood scars, and a car pulls up and Albie gets out to greet her.

He brings a suitcase full of money for Joan and throws it on the floor. Joan explains that she was released from prison early for good behavior.

Joan tells Albie she’s going back to work, but not through criminal means. She tells Albie to leave, but when he walks away and tells her to be careful, she says, “And you. Watch your damn king.”
