Police are working to build trust in the Latino community

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – In Roanoke, city police say crimes against Latinos are underreported.

Recently, Roanoke police have been pursuing crimes against Latinos, including robberies along Hershberger Road and a suspect accused of taking money from at least four businesses on Williamson Road.

Police say Latinos find it difficult to come forward because of language barriers and fear related to their immigration status.

To fill that gap, the department hosted several events this month, including a community dinner and a neighborhood walk.

“Some basic tips to prevent further crime, to instill more trust in our police department here in Roanoke City, and in hopes of spreading the message to other Hispanic members so they can also reach out to us if they need anything.” Patrolman Joshuah said Arellano.

Police say even a small tip can help solve crimes in your neighborhood.
