Reported stabbing at Austin middle school; a student was hospitalized

Local authorities are investigating a reported knife attack that occurred at a middle school in South Austin Thursday morning.

According to KXAN, Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services responded to a call at Covington Middle School, located at 3700 Convict Hill Road, around 9:07 a.m.

EMS transported a juvenile patient to the hospital. The patient suffered serious injuries that are not expected to be life-threatening, officials said.

Covington students evacuated the school after a fire alarm went off in the arts wing around 9:10 a.m., according to a letter sent to the Covington community by Principal Cedric Maddox.

Austin Independent School District police are still investigating the situation but believe a smoke bomb set off the fire alarm, Maddox said.

The principal also said that Covington administration is “aware of an altercation among students that occurred moments after the smoke alarm was activated.”

“It is unclear at this point whether the incidents are related,” Maddox added.

Students returned to class after officials searched the campus and determined it was safe to do so. The art wing remains closed while authorities continue their investigation.

This is a developing story.
