Take care of your neurodivergent child

Take care of your neurodivergent child

Many children who are on the autism spectrum or have ADHD also suffer from anxiety or depression, and parents caring for these children experience high levels of stress.

Diane Reid Lyons’ goal is to help parents feel less alone while finding ways to help their children. As a licensed clinical mental health counselor for more than three decades, she has helped hundreds of children, adolescents and adults find growth and healing while overcoming challenges such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, grief and trauma.

However, for much of her career she has focused on counseling children who are considered neurodivergent.

That’s why she wrote a book called “Caring for Yourself – Caring for Your Neurodivergent Child” to guide parents on the journey, from how to get a child tested for neurodivergence to learning how to support them.

In this episode of the Charlotte Ledger Podcast, Ledger Editor-in-Chief Cristina Bolling sits down with Reid to talk about her book and more, including:

  • Reid’s personal experience as someone with ADHD and as a parent of a neurodivergent child.

  • The importance of understanding your child’s diagnosis.

  • Navigating school systems designed for neurotypical students.

  • How to avoid “parent burnout” and loneliness.

  • Overcoming stigma and viewing the unique strengths of neurodivergent individuals as “superpowers.”

We hope you enjoy speaking with Diane Reid Lyon.
