Government. School teacher arrested for sexually harassing girls in Thanjavur

A government school teacher in Thanjavur district has been arrested for allegedly sexually harassing some of his girls.

Following the complaint, Child Helpline officials visited the school on August 13 and, with the permission of the principal, asked students to provide written responses to the allegations. Several students reported that Muthukumaran had indeed behaved inappropriately, prompting officials to escalate the matter.

Based on its findings, the Child Helpline submitted a report to the district’s chief education officer (CEO) and Muthukumaran was suspended from his position on August 14.

However, despite the suspension, no police report was filed for almost two months. When affected parents contacted the children’s hotline, they discovered that no proceedings had been initiated against the teacher.

The parents announced that they wanted to protest against it in front of the school. Meanwhile, Child Helpline officials lodged a complaint against Muthukumaran at Orathanadu All Women Police Station. Based on the complaint, police registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and arrested Muthukumaran on Wednesday. He was later taken into custody.
