Aaron Rodgers got Robert Saleh fired because of his play

The saga surrounding New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh’s firing on Tuesday went from the typical firing to speculation that Aaron Rodgers was the man behind the mask – he went to the owner and asked him to make that decision.

But Rodgers vehemently rejected such allegations The Pat McAfee Show Wednesday.

“I reject these allegations because they are patently false,” Rodgers told McAfee.

Mike Lupica, a longtime sports journalist and author, continued The Michael Kay Show that this was the most believable one Rodgers has ever spoken about The Pat McAfee Show. Lupica also suggested that Rodgers got Saleh fired, but not for the reasons many sports media outlets are speculating about.

“I think Pat McAfee made a good choice; This guy is hardly a coach assassin; He only played three times in 20 years,” Lupica said. “If he would have gotten a coach killed, he would have gotten Mike McCarthy fired in Green Bay long before he was, and folks — listen, there’s a lot going on. Rodgers got Saleh fired, but I don’t think he got Saleh fired because he went to the owner. I think he was fired because of the way he played.”

“I reject these allegations because they are patently false,” Rodgers told McAfee.

Rodgers did say that Jets owner Woody Johnson called him the night before the firing, but it was about how he was feeling after suffering an ankle sprain during the Week 5 loss to the Minnesota Vikings that ultimately became Saleh’s Job cost.

The Jets are 2-3 this season and have the longest playoff drought in North American professional sports. That’s why Saleh was kicked out. And fair or not, Johnson viewed this as a last-ditch effort to salvage a season he believes one of the NFL’s better rosters is capable of.

However, a change in head coach just means rearranging the Titanic’s deck chairs if Rodgers’ play fails to right the ship.
