The New York Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh on Tuesday after just five games, resulting in a 2-3 record.

The Jets had lost their last two games, including a 23-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London.

Former six-year NFL veteran Solomon Wilcots criticized the Jets for releasing Saleh during a recent appearance on OutKick’s “The Ricky Cobb Show.”

“Look, I know the temptation will be for people to lay this at the feet of Aaron Rodgers. I’m not absolving Aaron of where this thing is because his fingerprints are on it. He’s not the one who decided.” By all accounts, firing Robert Saleh doesn’t apply to Joe Douglas either. Remember, when Robert Saleh was hired before the start of the 2021 season, Woody Johnson served as ambassador to England. said Wilcots.

Wilcots believes Johnson’s dismissal of Saleh was more for appearances than football reasons.

“He was over in London, you know, having a great time there with his good friends, and now when his team goes back to London and they lose to the Minnesota Vikings, ‘Oh, I’ve got to do something about it.’ “I’m the guy who can fix it.” It seems arbitrary that he decided to take this step because “I have to fix it, I don’t want to waste Aaron Rodgers’ years.” But I could you “Now say that after the end of the game in London you know what really was the problem: the offense,” Wilcots added.

The Jets have scored a total of 26 points in their last two games and just 93 points in the first five games of this season, matching their offensive output in five games last season when Zach Wilson was the quarterback.

“It’s an offense with Nathaniel Hackett as coordinator and Aaron Rodgers as co-offensive coordinator that decided to run 108 passing plays in the last two games. Including a game against the Denver Broncos where it was windy, rainy, and the conditions weren’t even conducive to throwing the ball, but they forced 54 passing plays in that game. They threw the ball another 54 times in London against the Minnesota Vikings, 108 pass plays called compared to 37 run plays called. Eight sacks against Aaron Rodgers, three interceptions, including a pick six six. He threw two interceptions in the first quarter. said Wilcots.

“Still, we wanted to fire the head coach because he put in this great defense in every way. Robert Saleh’s defense is playing at the highest level, one of the top-rated defenses in the National Football League in all respects in terms of pass rush, pressure and coverage.

“Over the last three years they have ranked sixth overall in points allowed per game. When the game ended in London we were all worried about what we were going to do to fix this offense and even as we sit here today after the sacking of Robert Saleh that problem still exists.”

The Jets expected Rodgers to transform an offense that struggled mightily in his absence last season. Despite their ineffectiveness on offense last season, the Jets managed to win seven games with an elite defense.

The Jets promoted defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich to interim head coach, and he will be tasked with righting the ship.

Despite a slow start, the Jets will take the AFC East lead with a win in their next game against the Buffalo Bills on “Monday Night Football.”
