Towaco resident gets 16 years in prison for aggravated sexual assault

Morris County, NJ – Juan A. Fernandez, a 61-year-old resident of Towaco, New Jersey, was sentenced to 16 years in prison for aggravated sexual assault. The verdict was announced by Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll, along with Chief Detective Robert McNally and Montville Township Police Chief Andrew Caggiano.

According to NJSA 2C:14-2(a)(1), Fernandez pleaded guilty on June 19 to first-degree aggravated sexual assault. The Honorable Ralph Amirata, JSC, imposed the 16-year sentence on October 4 on the grounds that it must be served in full and there is no possibility of early release. Additionally, Fernandez is subject to lifetime parole supervision and will be bound by Megan’s Law upon his release. He is serving the last five years of his sentence at the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center.

The charges stem from repeated sexual acts by Fernandez against a juvenile male victim over a period of 10 years, beginning when the victim was six years old. The investigation into these crimes was launched in March.

  • Wilkes-Barre police arrest man after car and foot chase

    Wilkes-Barre, PA – A man was arrested Tuesday following a pursuit by Wilkes-Barre City Police. The incident occurred at 3:20 p.m. and involved the defendant, Paul Chavis, 55, of Wilkes-Barre, PA.

    Patrol officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the area of ​​Sullivan Street and South Franklin Street. Chavis, who was driving a black BMW, did not yield to officers’ lights and sirens. This sparked a chase that continued until Chavis exited the vehicle near South River Street and fled on foot.

    Shortly thereafter, officers arrested Chavis. During a search carried out as part of the arrest, officers seized suspected narcotics in his possession. Additionally, it was discovered that Chavis had an active warrant for his arrest from the Luzerne County Sheriff’s Office.

    After his arrest, Chavis was initially taken to the city headquarters. He was then transported to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility (LCCF) for further processing.
