1,000 Israeli soldiers are named in the International Criminal Court’s historic war crimes complaint

A Belgium-based advocacy group announced Tuesday that it has “filed an unprecedented and historic lawsuit with the International Criminal Court against 1,000 soldiers of the Israeli occupation forces for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in Gaza,” where more than 150,000 Palestinians were killed or wounded and millions more displaced, starving and sick as a result of Israel’s years-long attack.

The Hind Rajab Foundation – named after the six-year-old Palestinian girl killed by Israeli troops in January along with half a dozen relatives and rescue workers as they entered Gaza in retaliation for the Hamas-led attack in October 2023 – said that Israel Defense Forces (IDF) personnel named in the International Criminal Court (ICC) complaint are accused of “participating in systematic attacks against civilians during the ongoing genocide in Gaza.”

“This complaint, supported by over 8,000 verifiable pieces of evidence – including videos, audio recordings, forensic reports and social media documentation – proves soldiers’ direct involvement in these atrocities,” the group said. “All of the soldiers named were in Gaza during the genocidal attack and the evidence shows that they were involved in violations of international law.”

The foundation accuses the Israeli Defense Forces of:

  • Destruction of civilian infrastructure: Targeted attacks on homes, hospitals, schools, markets, mosques and other civilian infrastructure.
  • Illegal Occupation and Looting: Soldiers were documented occupying civilian homes, looting personal items, and exploiting occupied property.
  • Participation in the blockade of Gaza: Soldiers played an active role in enforcing a blockade that deprived civilians of essential goods such as food, water and medical care.
  • Attack on civilians: Audio and video evidence shows soldiers intentionally attacking non-combatants, including medical personnel and journalists.
  • Use of inhumane warfare tactics: indiscriminate bombing raids, famine and the systematic destruction of civilian infrastructure were part of their approach.

The IDF soldiers identified in the complaint include at least twelve American, twelve French, four Canadian, three British and two Dutch nationals.

“This complaint is not only the largest ever filed with the ICC, but it is also a milestone in documenting Israeli war crimes for future generations,” the Hind Rajab Foundation said. “By carefully identifying the perpetrators and detailing their crimes, we are creating a historical record that ensures those responsible are remembered and held accountable.”

“The filing of this complaint represents a significant moment in the fight for justice,” the group continued. “We honor the memory of Hind Rajab and the countless victims who perished in the ongoing genocide. Their stories will not be forgotten and their voices will be heard through our persistent legal action.”

The foundation added that the complaint “supports the efforts” of International Criminal Court prosecutor Karim Khan, who wants to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Hamas leaders, and “urges for immediate action.” , including release”. of arrest warrants against those responsible.

“We believe this complaint represents a turning point in the global fight for justice in Palestine,” the group said.

The filing of the lawsuit comes amid Israel’s ongoing attack on Gaza, for which the US-backed ally is facing genocide charges at the International Court of Justice. In recent weeks, Israel has escalated attacks in Lebanon, Syria and elsewhere, killing and wounding thousands of people and threatening to plunge the Middle East into a wider war.

The submission also took place on the same day Sky News released an investigation confirming that IDF officials lied when they repeatedly claimed that there were no Israeli troops near the site where Rajab was killed at the time of the attack. The British network published satellite images showing numerous IDF vehicles nearby and interviewed military experts who noted damage from bullets and tank shells to the vehicle in which the family was traveling.

The car was hit several times. Hind Rajab and her 15-year-old cousin Layan were the last survivors. In a recorded telephone conversation with Rajab’s mother before the two children were killed, Layan said: “The tanks are next to us.”

Hamas has no tanks.

The Sky News The investigation was at least the second journalistic investigation to conclude that Israeli officials were not telling the truth about the attack.

In June, the British research agency Forensic Architecture collaborated AlJazeera Journalists and the advocacy group Earshot have published an analysis that found Israeli tank fire likely fired the bullets that killed Rajab, her relatives and two medics who tried to save her in an ambulance that left despite the permission of the IDF to continue with the rescue was blown to pieces shortly before he was attacked.
