Man convicted of assaulting Phoenix police officer

PHOENIX – A man was sentenced to prison for assaulting a Phoenix police officer last year, authorities said Wednesday.

According to the Maricopa County District Attorney’s Office, 31-year-old Rudy Gomez was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to three counts of aggravated assault.

In April 2023, a woman stopped Phoenix police officer George Manciu near CEntral Avenue and Thomas Road. The woman, Gomez’s girlfriend, was involved in a domestic dispute with Gomez, who broke the window of her vehicle while her three children were inside.

When the officer attempted to defuse the situation, Gomez began punching him renders him unconscious.

Gomez continued to punch and kick the officer while he was unconscious. cause serious injuries such as cuts to the head, a fracture of the eye socket and a fracture of the nasal bone.

Gomez fled the scene but was captured by emergency responders.

“It is difficult to find words that adequately describe the brutal, cruel beating of this officer and the sheer inhumanity of the attack,” said Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell. “We have to support the people who protect us. One way to accomplish this is to send defendants like this to prison for as long as the law allows.”
