The Patriots’ Jabrill Peppers is placed on administrative leave by the NFL following his arrest on drug and assault charges

The Patriots’ Jabrill Peppers is placed on administrative leave by the NFL following his arrest on drug and assault charges

The NFL placed Patriots captain and safety Jabrill Peppers on the commissioner’s exempt list after he was arrested on strangulation and cocaine possession charges following an altercation with his girlfriend on Saturday in Braintree, Massachusetts.

Peppers, who pleaded not guilty at an arraignment Monday, will not be allowed to practice or participate in games while on the roster.

“I just want to be clear: any act of domestic violence is unacceptable to us as a team, whether you are a player or a staff member. We are firmly against any kind of domestic violence. I know the position of the organization, which I fully support,” first-year head coach Jerod Mayo said Wednesday.

“With that in mind, I think Jabrill needs to continue to go through due process. We’ll see how that works out. The league has placed him on the exempt list and that will give us time to gather more information in the future. He is currently not in the building and we will discuss this at a later date. As a father of three daughters, I fully understand the seriousness of the allegations and hope that they are not true.”

The Commissioner’s Exempt List is, according to NFL rules, “a special list of players available to clubs only in unusual circumstances.” “The list includes the players declared by the commissioner [Roger Goodell] to be temporarily exempt from counting within the active list boundary.”

Only Goodell can remove players from the list and determine how long they remain on the list.

According to a police report, Peppers, who turned 29 on Friday, was arrested on multiple charges when police responded to a disturbance call at a residence at 4:15 a.m. Saturday where there was an argument between Peppers and his girlfriend.

In it, the caller said Peppers “hit her, choked her, took her clothes off and took her outside.”

The woman, who told police she and the former giant dated “on and off for a few years,” was treated at the scene for injuries to her face and knees.

Peppers was charged with assault and battery in his third season with the Patriots; assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; Strangulation; and possession of a Class “B” substance, which police say is suspected to be cocaine.

Peppers pleaded not guilty during his arraignment Monday in Quincy, Massachusetts, District Court.

He posted $2,500 bail and was ordered to stay away from the woman.

Peppers’ attorney, Marc Brofsky, said in court that the evidence in the case “casts real doubt on the allegations, including the videotaped evidence.”

Peppers has a hearing scheduled for Nov. 22, but was allowed to waive his appearance.

“We are aware of an incident involving Jabrill Peppers over the weekend that police are currently investigating,” the Patriots said in a statement. “We will have no further comment at this time.”

Peppers missed Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins with a shoulder injury.

The Patriots will face the Texans on October 13th at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.

In four games this season, the Peppers recorded 23 tackles, two passes defended and one interception.

Peppers disputed the woman’s claim that he pushed her down the stairs — and claimed the woman behaved erratically because he refused to have unprotected sex with her, according to court documents obtained by TMZ.

“According to Jabrill, [the woman] continued to behave erratically and refused to leave,” police wrote. “According to Jabrill, [the woman] fell alone on the stairs because she was drunk. He denied pushing her down the stairs and said she made the allegations to destroy his career.”
