United Way of Central Ala. tackles child care shortage with new subsidy

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A new grant from United Way of Central Alabama is helping meet the need for more child care in Alabama. In central Alabama, 40% of children under the age of six do not have access to child care because it is unavailable.

Olivia Hayes is the Bold Goals Partnership Coordinator for United Way. She said many daycare centers are at capacity.

“This is a really critical issue as 90% of a child’s brain is developed before the age of five. “This lays the foundation for their success in accessing quality child care,” Hayes said.

The grants will free up more than 400 places. Selected daycare centers will receive more than $25,000.

“These funds will allow the centers to build another classroom so they can serve more children,” Hayes said.

Application is now open and closes October 31st. The application and admission requirements can be found here Here.
