Voters’ questions will be answered a month before Election Day

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) – An information session Tuesday helped ensure voters are informed as Election Day approaches.

“How do you register, how do you use absentee voting, how do you vote early,” said Jordan Walker, president of the Jefferson County AAUW. “There are a lot of different questions and concerns.”

Those questions were answered Tuesday night at a voter information session in Jefferson County.

Melvin Clayborne was at the event with his wife. He says they are happy to vote in person at a polling station in Black River.

“The same location every year,” he said. They know us.”

People who vote by mail in New York can request one online by October 26th or in person by November 4th.

Postal ballots can also be dropped off at a polling station on Election Day.

If you have not registered to vote, you have until October 26th to do so.

“It’s important to vote because that’s your democratic process,” Clayborne said. “You can’t say ‘I don’t like what’s going on’ if you didn’t vote, then you’re part of the problem and not the solution. You want to be part of the solution and not the problem.”

In addition to the election, this year’s vote will also involve amending the New York Constitution, Proposition 1.

It is an equality amendment that, if passed, would qualify more groups for protection from discrimination.

“Ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes, and reproductive health care and autonomy,” said Michelle LaFave, Democratic Commissioner of the County Board of Elections.

There are 38 polling places in Jefferson County.

Early voting runs from October 26th to November 3rd.

Early voting locations in Jefferson County include the county office building, the Adams Municipal Building and the Depauville Fire Station.

Election day is November 5th.
