WARWICK, R.I. – A local man is charged with assault via Kia after crashing his white 2019 car into a red 2016 Yamaha 260 at the intersection of West Shore Road and Sandy Lane on August 21 at 4:35 p.m had rammed, the police said.

Police have charged a local man, Kalyb Sangas, 20, of 26 Beaver Ave., who may or may not be the owner of the motorcycle, with assault for the Kia attack.

According to police, several witnesses saw the man ram the red 2016 motorcycle as he pursued it through the intersection in a 2019 Kia.

Attack by Kia: test drive escalates into chase

Officer Jake Reddy responded to the call, which was initially reported to be a crash between a car and a motorcycle. When he arrived at the intersection, he found the male motorcyclist, a minor, and the Kia driver, Sangas, among 10 people standing in the street yelling at each other, according to the officer’s report.

The motorcyclist was taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital for treatment of reported pain in his head, neck and lower leg/knee. The driver’s mother told officers that the motorcycle had been stolen from her home in Providence several days earlier, but they did not report it.

At the scene of the accident, Sangas told officers that he had listed the motorcycle for sale on Facebook Marketplace and that the minor had stopped by to take the motorcycle for a test ride. The minor returned and told Sangas that he would collect the money for the motorcycle from a friend and then return. Sangas had to go to work, so he left the motorcycle keys with his sister to complete the sale.

Sangas’ 28-year-old sister told officers that the minor returned and asked her to test ride the motorcycle again. She left his car key with her. However, as the minor drove away on the motorcycle, the black sedan in which he had arrived, which they said was unoccupied, also sped away. She called 911 to report that the minor had stolen the motorcycle. Sangas’ mother called him and told him that the motorcycle had been stolen.

While driving near West Shore Road, Sangas spotted the motorcycle and turned to pursue it, intentionally driving his Kia into the Yamaha, according to Reddy’s report. Multiple witnesses reported Sangas chasing the motorcycle at speeds of nearly 100 miles per hour. According to the report, there were also several witnesses to the attack via Kia who reported Sangas’ white Kia crashed into the motorcycle as the vehicles entered the intersection.

Reddy arrested Sangas and took him to Kent Hospital for complaints of pain, where he was medically cleared and then released back to WPD headquarters, 99 Veterans Memorial Drive, where he was charged with assault.
