The Life Learning Center reports on the successful 10th annual fundraiser, the High Stakes Gala 2024

The Life Learning Center (LLC) recently hosted its 10th annual fundraiser, the 2024 High Stakes Gala, at Turfway Park Racing and Gaming in Florence and welcomed over 350 guests.

The event raised $429,000 to support the LLC’s mission to reduce recidivism and build a healthier workforce. This year’s gala not only had the highest attendance, but also set a record for donations during the Paddle Raise.

LLC is dedicated to helping individuals overcome the challenges of poverty, unemployment and hopelessness and empowering individuals through its life skills curriculum, career preparation programs and placement, and personalized care resources – items such as food, clothing and transportation to bring about lasting changes in life.

The organization provides solutions that break the cycle of poverty, unemployment, incarceration and substance use disorder (SUD) by helping people and their families. Working with local communities and probation and parole agencies, LLC provides a unique path to reintegration that allows participants to rebuild their lives and reintegrate into society. In 2023, the recidivism rate for LLC graduates was 6%, a stark contrast to the national average of 83%. Additionally, 2023 graduates contribute $7.2 million back into the economy, with an average salary of $19.50 per hour.

Evan Millward, professional storyteller and longtime Cincinnati anchor/reporter, moderated the event, while the Rev. John C. Iffert, bishop of the Diocese of Covington, delivered the invocation. H. David Wallace, CEO and Chairman of Heritage Bank, served as live auctioneer.

LLC President and CEO Alecia Webb-Edgington, along with Chairman William P. Butler, shared updates on the organization’s growth and future expansion locally and regionally. Guests also enjoyed live and silent auctions, a ribbon pull raffle and entertainment from Pones, Inc. and the Charlie Suits Big Band.

The highlight of the evening was a tribute to Paul and Mary Hemmer for recognizing their contributions to the community. Also in the spotlight was the journey of Lucy Eades, an LLC success story with a personal connection to the evening’s honorees.

Eades shared her personal story and highlighted the impact of LLC’s programs. With the organization’s support, Eades regained custody of her youngest child and found a career path she is passionate about.

“The Life Learning Center has helped me with everything from getting a license to finding a job,” Eades said during a video spotlight. “They taught me how to save money, how to be part of the community and how to live honestly. The Life Learning Center has made a huge difference in my life – they have always been there to help.”
