Kirksville police arrest the suspect who stabbed Dakota McClelland

Kirksville Police have confirmed the identity of the victim of a fatal stabbing that occurred on the morning of Tuesday, October 8, in Kirksville, Missouri. 16-year-old Dakota McClelland of Kirksville died at the scene.

Authorities have also identified the suspect as 21-year-old Shawn Michael Dukes, also from Kirksville. Dukes was taken into custody following the incident and charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.

The stabbing occurred near South Florence Street and East Jefferson Street. Officers responded to the scene, arrested the suspect and rendered aid to the victim. Shortly thereafter, the Kirksville Fire Department and Adair County EMS arrived and provided treatment, but McClelland succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dukes, the suspect, sustained injuries related to the incident and was transported for medical treatment.

Kirksville Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
