TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG/Gray News) – Police say an Ohio father was hospitalized after his 9-year-old son accidentally hit him during a lesson on reversing a car. The incident was captured on video.

According to court documents, Clejuan Williams, 36, was allegedly drunk when he tried to teach his 9-year-old son to drive on Sunday. The father allegedly told his son to step on a pedal, and without knowing which one, the boy hit the accelerator. The car backed up and crashed into a pole across the street, WTVG reports.

According to police reports, Williams was standing in the driver’s side door jam and when the car reversed, he was knocked over and dragged underneath.

“It’s heartbreaking to see because as a parent, when you see something like this happen, you think about how to prevent it,” said Toledo Police Officer Prince Flores.

Toledo Fire and Rescue crews took Williams to the hospital. His condition is currently unknown.

Another child was reportedly in the back seat of the car at the time of the incident. None of the children were injured.

Police say Williams’ son was too young to be behind the wheel and his father failed to protect him.

“As a parent, your job is to make sure your children are safe and make informed decisions, and you want to make sure you’re putting them in the best position possible to do well,” Flores said. “You don’t “I don’t want to put them in a situation that they’re not ready for or mature enough to realize.”

Court records show Williams faces charges of unlawful transfer of a motor vehicle and child endangerment.

The incident is under investigation.
