Israeli police launch criminal investigation against Biton – Israel News

Criminal proceedings were initiated against Minister Haim Biton (Shas) on suspicion of illegally financing a party-affiliated newspaper with state funds, KAN reported on Tuesday evening.

KAN had previously reported this Haderech, The Shas-affiliated newspaper paid its staff with money from the party’s Ma’ayan HaTorah school network, which is budgeted by the Education Ministry.

The central concern of the ongoing investigation is that during Biton’s tenure as CEO of the education network for the Ministry of Education, public funds were used to finance the party-affiliated private newspaper.

Funding was reportedly provided in a variety of ways. One involved the salary of a network employee who was a former editor of the newspaper. According to the evidence presented, another suspected operation involved a circuitous transaction through a printing company that provides services to Ma’ayan HaTorah.

According to the allegations, Ma’ayan HaTorah offered to pay hundreds of thousands of shekels to prevent the publication of documents linking it to the newspaper’s financing.

“Public resources for partisan purposes”

“We do not comment on the existence of investigative measures. This does not confirm or deny the existence of such measures,” Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara said of the investigation.

In 2020, the Attorney General’s Office ruled that Biton could not be CEO of the party and the education network at the same time.

The Movement for Quality Government in Israel submitted several requests to the Attorney General, the Police Commissioner and the Prosecutor to open a criminal investigation.

“We welcome the decision to initiate a criminal investigation into this serious case,” it said in a statement. “There is a suspicion here of extensive use of public funds for party political purposes, which is damaging the education system and public trust. We call on the police and prosecutors to investigate the case thoroughly and as quickly as possible and to prosecute everyone involved. “We will continue to monitor the progress of the investigation and advocate for standards in public life.”

Biton’s office had no comment, but later announced that he planned to file a lawsuit in retaliation.
