LA Sheriff Reports Man Death in Custody; 7 others were hospitalized

Top line:

A man being held at an LA County jail is dead and seven other people in the same cell were hospitalized Tuesday morning, according to the sheriff’s and fire departments.

What we know: Sheriff’s officials said officers performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the overdose drug Narcan on a 32-year-old man who was unresponsive. Firefighters and paramedics from Los Angeles who were on scene determined that the patient was no longer able to receive medical attention and that he died at the scene of the accident. This was the 24th person to die in LA County Sheriff’s custody so far in 2024.

About the others who were hospitalized: Fire officials said they called a hazmat team to decontaminate the area “due to the presence of an unknown white substance on the patient’s clothing.” None of the other people were in distress, but paramedics took six of them to a hospital.

Officers later took a seventh person, who initially refused treatment, to a hospital.

What we know about drug use in prisons: Sheriff’s officials say they have used naloxone, known by the brand name Narcan, on nearly 200 incarcerated people this year.
