The reinstatement bid for the former Phoenix police officer fired in April continues

A former Phoenix police officer who was fired by the department chief in April is still waiting to find out whether he will get his job back.

Jesse Johnson’s applications have been rejected twice by the city’s Department of Public Service, but his appeal is still pending.

Johnson was fired in April over a 2022 shooting that resulted in a $5.5 million payout from the city.

A blistering civil rights report from the U.S. Department of Justice cited the incident as an example of Phoenix police using tactics that increase the risk of deadly encounters.

Within hours of the DOJ report’s release in June, Johnson’s appeal was received by the Phoenix Civil Service Board and rejected.

Last month, Johnson’s request for reconsideration was also rejected by the board.

But his appeal continues.

The board was scheduled to meet this week but will not meet again until November.
