TBI special agents investigate officer-involved shooting in Hamilton County – TBINewsroom.com

At the request of 11th Judicial District Attorney General Coty Wamp, TBI special agents are investigating the circumstances leading to a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon in Hamilton County.

Preliminary information indicates members of the U.S. Marshals Service’s Smokey Mountain Fugitive Task Force were attempting to locate a wanted person at an apartment complex on N. Germantown Road in Chattanooga. While questioning residents of the complex, a confrontation occurred with two men who attempted to drive away in a vehicle. Initial reports from the scene indicate that marshals attempted to prevent the vehicle from leaving, but the driver, Samuel Story (DOB May 9, 1980), reversed his vehicle. A marshal was trapped between the door of the vehicle and dragged along. The marshal fired his service weapon, hitting Story. The driver was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries. The marshal was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

At this time, this investigation is still active and ongoing. TBI agents are working to independently investigate the series of events that led to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, the results of the investigation are communicated to the Prosecutor General’s Office for further review and review. The TBI acts solely as an expert witness in its cases and does not determine whether an officer’s actions in such matters were justified. That decision rests with the district attorney, who requests TBI involvement.

The TBI does not identify officers involved in incidents of this nature and instead refers questions of this nature to the appropriate department, which may respond at its discretion.

All available updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
