Patriots reportedly plan to use Drake Maye at quarterback against Houston Texans – Boston News, Weather, Sports

FOXBORO, MASS. (WHDH) – Drake Maye is expected to make his first career start when the Patriots take on the Texans on Sunday, according to multiple reports.

Maye hasn’t played since the Patriots’ 24-3 loss to the New York Jets on Sept. 19. However, after another loss to Seattle in Week 4, pressure has increased on team leadership to hand Maye the reins of their offense.

According to reports from ESPN and several other media outlets, head coach Jerod Mayo appears ready to promote Maye.

Selected third overall in this year’s NFL Draft, Maye has caught the attention of many fans as a potential new franchise quarterback for a team that has struggled since the departure of Tom Brady.

Maye earned high praise in training camp, but sat on the sidelines for most of New England’s first five games of the season while veteran Jacoby Brissett took over the starting role.

After a Week 1 win against Cincinnati, Brissett and the Patriots have battled through a four-game losing streak.

With their season just around the corner, the Patriots are hoping that the 21-year-old Maye will be able to revitalize an offense that ranks last in the NFL in passing yards per game and in total yards per game Game is in second to last place.

With his start on Sunday, Maye will become the fourth rookie quarterback to lead an NFL team this season, joining the Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders and Denver Broncos.

Kick-off on Sunday is at 1 p.m
