Robert Saleh was “taken by surprise” by the jets that were fired.

Robert Saleh was fired Tuesday morning after more than three seasons as head coach of the New York Jets. Although the team struggled during his tenure, the move still came as a surprise to many fans and members of the media.

According to Jay Glazer, Robert Saleh was also shocked to hear the news this morning. The FOX NFL Insider reported that Saleh told him he was “caught off guard” when owner Woody Johnson showed up at his office Tuesday morning to break the news.

Saleh had tried to lead the Jets through three lean years before being fired today. In his first season, he was paired with freshman Zach Wilson. In his second season, his quarterbacks were Wilson, Joe Flacco, Mike White and, for one game, Chris Streveler. Things were supposed to get easier with the arrival of Aaron Rodgers in 2023, but he was lost for the year after a few games.

This year, with a healthy Rodgers, the offense continued to struggle to move the ball or score points. Now, two days after Rodgers threw three interceptions in London, Saleh is out of a job. You can understand why he might be the most surprised to hear that.
