Jonathan Van Ness: Trump ad appearance “iconic” yet “disturbing”

“Queer Eye” star Jonathan Van Ness seems unnerved that they were used as material for a right-wing election commercial.

The reality star, who is non-binary and uses the pronouns “they/them,” said in an Instagram post on Monday that he was slightly amused but mostly disturbed to see himself in a Republican PAC ad , in which he denounces Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.

The ad features footage of Van Ness with Harris and drag queen Pattie Gonia proclaiming that “crazy liberal Kamala is for she/her” while “President Trump is for you.”

Van Ness shared a close-up selfie of her reaction and said it was “surreal” to appear in the campaign commercial, which they described as a mix of “iconic” and “mostly very disturbing.”

“In this commercial, Trump denigrated immigrants, trans people and queer people in general,” explained the hair and beauty expert, who came out as non-binary in 2019.

They further warned their supporters not to “think that these white nationalist Christian politicians are not a threat to you and vote that way.”

Van Ness detailed why they support Harris in the caption: “As a non-binary person, I am immediately wary when faced with a binary choice. But this election is really about moving forward in all the messy imperfection and trying to trust each other again.”

In contrast to the Republicans’ approach, the Netflix personality said conservatives are determined to “return to a time when women needed their husbands to open a checking account and when racial segregation was also a matter of ‘states’ rights.’

Van Ness then called Trump “an authoritarian dictator who enjoys absolute immunity from the Supreme Court.”

“Please choose hope over fear. Faith trumps guilt,” the star concluded, adding, “I love you all.”

Van Ness endorsed Harris in July after President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race.

In a post on Facebook at the time, they said: “I believe Vice President Harris will be President Harris! She has what it takes to lead an America that is safe, prosperous and fair for all!”
