1 dead, 6 others injured after hazmat incident at DTLA prison

One person died and six others were hospitalized after a hazmat incident at the Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday morning.

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) – One person died and six others were hospitalized after a hazmat incident at the men’s prison in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday morning.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the incident occurred around 8:40 a.m. at the facility on Bauchet Street. All those involved are said to have been prison inmates.

The seven people were overcome by a toxic substance, authorities said, but they did not confirm what substance it was.

One person died at the scene of the accident despite life-saving measures being taken. The condition of the others was unknown.

No officers were injured or involved in the incident. An investigation is underway.
