On October 4, Judge Raffinan of the D.C. Supreme Court allowed a stabbing defendant to remain on probation while he awaits further proceedings in a Maryland case.

On February 3, 2017, Antoine Cartwright, 33, pleaded guilty to assault with intent to kill with an armed weapon and first-degree burglary for his role in a stabbing that injured one person on September 8, 2016, in the 700 block of Brandywine Street SE.

Cartwright’s probation was extended after he was re-arrested for an unspecified matter in Maryland to which he pleaded guilty. The probation officer, with the consent of the prosecution, requested that the probation be revoked, but the defense objected.

The probation officer said the nature of Cartwright’s crimes and his re-arrest in Maryland raises compliance issues. The prosecutor’s office said that ending probation early should not be an option.

Defense attorney Lee Goebes said Cartwright had complied with his probation and completed domestic violence courses despite his arrest in Maryland.

Judge Raffinan decided to continue Cartwright’s probation, stressing that he only has less than a year left, but his probation will be terminated if there are any further violations.

No new court dates have been set.
