In an interview with a 60 Minutes correspondent, Harris revealed to Bill Whitaker that she owns a handgun made by Glock, an Austrian company whose polymer-framed, striker-fired semi-automatic handguns are popular with law enforcement agencies in the United States and abroad.

The US Vice President’s weapon of choice has been the subject of much speculation since she revealed to television personality Oprah Winfrey that she owned a gun and would shoot anyone who entered her home.

“I have a Glock, and have had it for quite some time,” the former prosecutor and California attorney general said when asked what type of firearm she was packing.

“My background is in law enforcement. And – so here we go,” Harris added.

Harris laughed when interviewer Bill Whitaker asked her if she had ever shot a Glock. “Of course I did. At a shooting range. Yes, of course I did,” she replied.

Whitaker admitted to Harris that several people were in shock when she told Winfrey, “If anyone breaks into my house, they’ll be shot!”

In response, Harris said she “probably shouldn’t have said that” and suggested her team would “clean up” her comments as Winfrey laughed.

Addressing the remarks, Harris pointed out that she had admitted to owning guns in previous campaigns.

Everything you need to know about guns from Harris and Tim Walz

Harris said the reason she originally purchased the gun was because of her background as a law enforcement officer.

While Harris admitted in Monday’s interview that it was “not the first time I’ve talked about it,” she surprised viewers when she brought up her gun ownership during her first presidential debate against former President Donald Trump. Harris told Trump that she and Walz own guns and that they are “not taking away anyone’s guns, so stop lying about this stuff all the time.”

Back in 2019, Harris admitted that she owned a gun for “personal safety reasons.” Her staffer told CNN that prosecutors often keep pistols for protection because they were “personally responsible for locking up very serious violent criminals.”

In addition to being an avid hunter and gun owner, Walz has openly supported gun control measures, although he previously received support from the National Rifle Association during his time in Congress.
