A 70-year-old woman was killed when a driver fleeing police in Bessemer struck her head-on, the coroner said

A Birmingham woman was killed when her vehicle was struck head-on by another driver fleeing police in Bessemer.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the fatality as Angela Strickland Lockhart. She was 70.

The accident occurred at 1:17 p.m. Monday on Interstate 59/20 near Academy Drive in Bessemer.

Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said Lockhart’s vehicle was struck head-on by another vehicle that was fleeing from Bessemer police. Efforts to ask the police for further information were initially unsuccessful.

Lockhart was taken to UAB Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 5:16 p.m. At least one other person was injured.

No further details were released.

The accident shut down this part of the highway for several hours.

Alabama State Troopers are leading the investigation.
