2 UMES students dead, 2 DMV residents injured after suspected traffic accident in Delaware

Two University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) students are dead and two DMV residents are injured following an accident in Seaford, Delaware on Sunday, October 6, according to Delaware State Police.

Officials said a Nissan was traveling south on Sussex Highway in the left lane south of Cannon Road around 1:34 a.m

At the same time, a northbound Honda was traveling in the left southbound lane of Sussex Highway in the path of the Nissan, officials said.

According to officials, the front of the Nissan collided with the front of the Honda on Sussex Highway.

A 22-year-old man from Fayetteville, North Carolina, who was sitting in the front passenger seat of the Nissan, was pronounced dead at the scene, along with an 18-year-old woman from Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, who was sitting in the right rear seat. according to officials.

The driver of the Nissan, a 22-year-old man from D.C., and an 18-year-old woman from Bethesda, Maryland, who was sitting in the left passenger seat, were taken to a hospital with serious injuries, officials said.

The driver of the Honda, a 24-year-old man from Georgetown, Delaware, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, officials said. A passenger in the Honda, a 40-year-old man from Georgetown, Delaware, was also taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials said impairment is a suspected cause of this crash.

The Delaware State Police continue to investigate.

UMES officials shared the following statement:

“Given the heavy emotional toll on our campus caused by the fatal car accident that left two students dead and two others seriously injured, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore will suspend classes on Monday, October 7 and Tuesday, October 8. to allow our community to mourn these tragedies.

These wellness days allow students, faculty and staff to begin the healing process, receive support through our counseling services, and come together as a community to process these painful losses.

On Monday, the university will observe a moment of silence in the Student Services Center courtyard at 6:30 p.m. to remember the lost students and pray for the injured students.

Tuesday will be a wellness day, details to be announced.
