Arrest after hotel shooting | News, sports, jobs

A Minot man appeared in North Central District Court for the first time Monday after being charged in connection with a shooting at a hotel in northwest Minot on Sunday.

Deyan Robert Luetzen, 23, Minot, was charged with reckless endangerment, extreme indifference, dangerous weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm or violent disorder, both Class C felonies.

According to the affidavit, Minot police officers were dispatched to the hotel at 6 a.m. to investigate a reported shooting. Luetzen was observed fleeing the hotel on foot, and a Glock pistol was found in a field on the way from the hotel. Luetzen was shot in the right leg and foot and was taken to a Minot hospital for treatment.

The Glock found by officers only contained one cartridge, and a second firearm was outside the hotel under the window of the room Lützen had rented. The window grille to Luetzen’s room was open, indicating that the second firearm had been thrown out of the room.

Officers discovered bullet holes in the plasterboard throughout the south landing of the hotel, as well as additional bullet holes in the interior walls, doors, floors and ceilings. Court documents indicate that a large amount of spent shell casings were discovered in the hallway outside Luetzen’s room, as well as bullet fragments in the hallway and landing area of the second and third floors of the hotel, consistent with a possible shootout.

According to the affidavit, Lützen told investigators he was alone after a party and sleeping in his room when he was shot and fled on foot. Luetzen said he did not know who shot him and denied owning or firing a firearm. Luetzen was arrested because of his proximity to the recovered Glock and was banned from owning a firearm after being convicted of reckless endangerment last year.

Luetzen is scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing on Thursday, November 14th at 9 a.m. According to Minot police, the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
