3 dead after medical helicopter crashes in northern Kentucky

OWENTON, Ky. (WKRC) – Three people are dead after a medical helicopter crashed during a mission in Owenton, Kentucky.

According to the Owen County Coroner’s Office, the helicopter crashed near Owen County High School.

“Air Evac Lifeteam is heartbroken to announce that three crew members from AEL Base 133 died in a helicopter accident in Owenton, Kentucky today,” an Air Evac Lifeteam spokesperson said.

The crew was in Grant County and was en route to the scene to pick up a patient when the accident occurred. It is not known what led to the crash, but AEL is working with other authorities to investigate the incident.

“This was a terribly tragic accident and our deepest condolences go out to the families and friends of the employees. Our main focus now is supporting the affected families and our team members. Critical incident stress management teams have been deployed. “We are supporting our team members during this difficult time,” the spokesperson said.

The names of the deceased have not been released.

A preliminary report is expected to be released within 30 days, but the final report is expected within 12 to 24 months.
