Man charged in JCC Road Rage shooting allegedly fired at least five shots

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. – A man was arrested over the weekend in Surry in connection with a suspected road rage shooting that left two people hospitalized.

James City County police said they responded to a shooting near Monticello Avenue and Greensprings Plantation Drive on Saturday before 3 p.m.

According to court documents, the shooting is believed to be related to a road rage incident.

A search warrant says the shooting involved two patients, a woman and a boy.

A second child was also in the victim’s car but was not injured.

It was reported that the victim’s vehicle with three occupants was aggressively struck by another car shortly after exiting a neighborhood.

A few seconds later, the victim’s vehicle stopped at a traffic light near Centerville Road and Monticello Avenue and was struck by the aggressive driver.

Joseph Adams, 44, allegedly pulled out a gun and fired at least five shots into the passenger side of the victim’s car.

An adult woman and a boy were both shot. The woman’s face was injured and the boy was injured in the arm.

Both were taken to hospital.

The other child, who was not injured, was able to film Adams allegedly shooting at the victim’s car.

Adams’ car was later found by flock cameras shortly after the shooting and was on the ferry en route to Surry.

Court documents say Adams was sitting in the passenger seat and was holding a gun.

When Surry Sheriff’s deputies encountered him, he reportedly had a strong odor of alcohol and had red, glassy eyes.

Adams took a breath test, which reportedly returned a reading of .14.

He was arrested in Surry and is facing multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated and two counts of aggravated assault with intent.

Adams was arraigned in court Monday and was not granted bail.

He has scheduled a preliminary hearing for Nov. 21.
